I have to TVO the show so I can fast forward to the actual car builds. I cant stand the guys on the show or the things the say. I hope for this price some guys in back of the shop know their stuff. They have not shown me anything to say that they are the best in the world.  :2cents:

For me...I've never seen this particular show.....but as with most of these shows, the "added drama or childish antics" make for certain that I would never want to take a car there or have them do work for me. :2cents: They look like bozos :nono:

I have seen the work that GYC has turned out....and it confirms to me that I wouldn't want them to work on my car at any price. :screwy:

I recorded one the shows to watch it later and fast forwarded through the boring stuff.  Turned out I spent less than five minutes watching it.  At least it's a quick mopar fix.

Oh my gosh...I can't believe you guys are serious..... :screwy:

You have to understand what cosmoline dip was used for. Companies that manufactured parts for Chrysler would dip bare metal parts in cosmoline to protect them from rust for the short time period between the manufactured time and the time the car was assembled.

These particular parts were hooked on the ball joint end and dipped into cosmoline up to the area where the strut rod is anchored. Chrysler did NOT want cosmoline to interfere with the installation of the ball joint or strut rod.

The NOS pictures posted above clearly show the dip line. The cosmoline protected the entire control arm from rust up until the dip line and you can see surface rust starting where the ball joint and strut rod attach.

The ones pictured from this yellow AAR are a joke much like the idiots on TV. To use the excuse that "that was the way they were found on this particular car" is even a bigger joke....It's their BS excuse to cover the fact they have no clue as to what correct details look like. :2cents:

Just noticed the picture of the control arm on your post. Not sure who's that is and I don't want to be overly critical but one would think if you're going to go through all the trouble of making a part appear correct with the factory dip then you'd think they'd use a part that was in a little better condition to start with. That arm is so rust pitted that it makes the use of cosmoline just seem ridiculous.
Those lower control arms were a dime-a-dozen. They were used on a LOT more cars than just E-bodies. Surely they could have found ones in better shape than that to restore. I know I'd be livid if they put something like that on a restoration that I was spending 5-6 figures on. Just sayin...

Very valid point....Try explaing to a customer that his control arms are no good because of "rust pits".....and need to be replaced. Most of my customers work on a tight budget and their money can be spent in better places. :2cents:

I believe the ones in my picture were for my own car, in which case I certainly wasn't going to spend the extra dollars. Maybe I should have just coated them in Por15 and called it a day. :dunno:

Here is a photo of my front suspension before I install it in my Challenger. I spoke several times with Rodger Gibson about details on the suspension and he told me pretty much the same story Alan posted about the control arm dipping. He did say he has seen some cars with arms painted black which he said that if the cosmoline tanks were busy with marine parts then they just dipped them in black paint. The white spot in the middle of the K frame was on there when I took the car apart. I sent photo's to Rodger Gibson and Frank Battlson and Galen and none of them ever saw this mark before but Rodger said if it was on there then put it back on so I did.

Just out of curiosity and one of the last episodes I watched of Staveoffcarz it looked like this guy is having Mark do another car?

Did this AAR sell or did he keep it for 80k?

And the same way he did the AAR, just the body and suspension no interior or engine/drivetrain.

I for one am happy there is a Mopar-only show.  I watch it all the time and skip thru the silliness...  for me there is plenty to learn regarding restoration.  I'm even considering re-skinning my driver's door after they showed in good detail how to do it.   :2cents:

Besides, it's better than watching yet another mustang/camaro get restored on the other shows.

Yup - I used to part out Cudas and Challenegers through the later 80s and early 90s. Most were treated with Cosmoline when new, and therefore by that time after being exposed to the Northeast road salting - rusty, but there were a couple untouched original cars that had black paint on one or both.
