Drop / slam into reverse or drive

I should know this, but I don't, what causes an auto car to drop hard into gear, reverse of drive, from idle.
My 360 idles away and when I pull it down into R or D it hits pretty hard into gear.
Is there any way to fix it??

Lower idle spped , looser converter , there should be a way to slow the accumulater with a stiffer spring internally

Jas, are you sure it's the trans that's banging? Any slop in either the U-joints or diff?

hmmm good point...the u joints are all just a couple of years old...could it be in the rear end...it has never been touched??
The idle is currently at 750, stock converter. Vacuum at idle in drive is around 12.
