Fuel Tank Question
« on: June 29, 2014 - 03:35:45 PM »
Hey Ya'll,
Been a while since I have been on but life has a way of doing that.
I am looking to replace my fuel tank in my 70 Challenger. I put a new one in 14 years ago when I restore the car. The sending unit went south so I bought a new one and when I pulled out the old one  it was rusty. There was rust in the tank from condensation. ( It sits a lot and I try to keep it full) anyway I want to replace it. It is a ESC  Calif car and has the 4 vent tubes coming off the side. Year one has them for $239.00. I found them on Jim's and some other place for $ 199.00. Just wondering if anybody had an suggestions. I have bought a ton of parts from Year One  and never had a problem with any of them but it has been years ago before all this China crap hit the market. I will pay more if it is made in the USA !!
Thanks

all the rust is probably from the ethanol gas. it does that to the metal. i've had tanks out of cars that didn't see ethanol gas and they look brand new inside.

most all these parts dealers get their stock from the same 2 suppliers. year one is great because they will always take returns no questions asked.
but they are a little higher. i ordered a tank for my '72 from ebay. so far so good. think i paid $189 w/ shipping. that was 5 years back.

Doesn't look like Rockauto has ECS unit.  Just Google what you are looking for.  Spectra seems to be the way to go.

Sorry....But the best reproduction gas tanks are manufactured in  :canada: Canada :canada: by Spectra. I just bought one on EBay for $139 with FREE shipping. All you need to shop for is a 1971 Challenger tank, they all have four vent tubes out the righthand side.

Nice article about fuel tank and lines in MM Mag using Quanta too.

Thanks for the info. Are the 71 tanks correct for the 70's. Not just looking for a replacement but the factory correct one.
Thanks again

If your tank does indeed require the four tubes out the righthand side then YES a 71 tank is correct.

Now Rockauto does have the tank for 71 at $159, same part # as Quanta.  That's an option.

Are you trying to make it look authentic to a '71?  I have a '71 Chally and did not like the vent tube coming up from the trunk floor and the four tubes hanging down by the RR tire, so I cut them out when I replaced my trunk floors.  I installed a new 3/8" main line and ran a 1/4" return line with a vented gas cap.  Much cleaner look.  :2cents:

my '72 challenger has the same tank. it has that long round vapor separator on the right side of the trunk.

I can live with Canada--it is China that will never see my cars.
