I am about to order these gauges

I plan to use the original non-rally gauges house, cut out the center of the gauge, inset the new VDO gauge and install so as to retain the "closest to original" look I can with modern gauges.

My question to someone who has replaced the original gauges with a newer gauge set is; what did you do with the original wiring to the original gauges. What did you remove, replace, change? I plan to leave all other wiring as is because everything works fine.
Any directions  or sharing of knowledge and experience would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be making some post as I make progress so you can see how it goes.

Looking at VDO gauges also...  Did you find the right ohm for the fuel?

Surfmichaels, I haven't talked to them yet. I need to the post I saw earlier stating what ohm was needed for the Cuda sender.
If anyone remembers, I would appreciate a recap.

I wrote down the the gauge needed was a 10-70 ohm but I haven't confirmed or found a gauge that matched that yet. To me VDO looks the best but selection in the lines I liked was lacking.....

the wiring would all be different . the factory gauges run on a pulsing 5v feed , VDO use 12v , the secondary wiring could be used from the gauge to the sending unit though but the sending units may need to be changed out to allow the gauge to read correctly , fuel sender is the toughest & you cannot swap that out unlike oil & water temp .

Thanks chryco, that also helps solve the mystery of why the current cheap equus gauges the prior owner installed didn't work. I'm starting from scratch, I wish original gauge panels  were a bit cheaper, and maybe more accurate :)

Chryco Physho, you are a fountain of knowledge on this cars. I am envious.
Devil, your dash looks great!

I plan to wire the new gauge cluster as a separate assemble with a single fused 12 volt power feed and ground.
I have wired many hotrods over the years so wiring the cluster doesn't concern me but what I do have doubts about is what do I do with the wiring from the original?
Can I just terminate each attachment point where it attached to the original gauge? If I do this will it affect anything else, is there something else getting power from the gauges?

Mick,

The wiring under the dash on my car was in sad shape due to a fire, rat damage, and some poor repairs by a prior owner(s).  Being there was nothing rare about the car, I built a new panel as you are doing.

For connectors, I used trailer wiring connectors so that I could easily unplug or replug if I needed to pull the dash-for instance, I took the two turn signal bulbs that I installed and took the hot side from each and ran them to a two pin connector.  I took original two turn signal wires, cut them off and attached the left to one side of the mating trailer connector and the right to the other side of the same connector...making sure they matched up with left and right in my new cluster.

I used leds for all bulbs for hopefully long life and because the dimmer is burned out in my light switch.

I did the same with the common ground wire of the cluster and the ignition hot wire of the cluster.  I used mechanical gauges for the cluster but I put in three jewel lights for Brights, E brake, and, a oil pressure warning light (in case I ever get around to teeing a warning light sender into the oil pressure feed).

Given the wiring was in such bad shape under the dash, I clipped off all the bad leads that went to the dash and replaced what I needed or rerouted an individual wire if I did not like how it was done originally.  I by-passed the bulk head connector with several wires due to bad voltage drop from undersized/corroded/burned contacts.

In other words, I pretended I was wiring a hot rod. :)

Strawdawg, Thanks for the reply and recap of how you did yours. I like your approach.

If you have a picture, I would love to see how it looked when you finished.

I have an idea in my head as how to make the VDO gauges look almost original; possibly to the point the average person cannot tell they are not stock.

Also, if I can ask, what gauges and what ohm fuel gauge did you use. I see where VDO has a 0-90 ohm and I am wondering if this would read correctly.

No,  It will not.  Mopar senders read about 10 ohms full and about 73 ohms empty.

Took me awhile

here are a couple taken when I was almost finished and one in the car as I was putting it back together...The problem with the base cluster is that there is no place for a tach.  At the moment, I am trying to figure out where to mount a matching 2 5/8" tach without it being too ricer looking but located so that I can see it if I want to....

I found someone selling a race car panel on ebay and got a good collection of new gauges for very little money.  Don't normally luck out like that

I left some slack in the wiring so I could get to something from the front if I needed to...bit messy but then most will never know...:)
