Cars always break at the worst times!
« on: June 30, 2014 - 11:09:47 AM »
I was on the way to the car show about 1.5 hours away from my house and right after grabbing a cup of coffee I go to open my door and SNAP off comes my door handle. After 40 years the handle decided it was time to end it's life. As soon as I got home that familiar smell of burning oil came back apparently it's still leaking oil putting an end to my fun driving times.

I was fianlly excited to have a year where I could drive the car problem free.

If my daily driver were this bad i'd junk it but funny how these old mopars can still win us over problem after problem lol.

AT least new handles are available , have you checked the oil sender at the back of the engine , I have seen untraceable leaks back there

My door handle stayed on yesterday.  But the alternator belt decided it wanted to leave my engine.  happened right next to an autozone.  bought a belt. borrowed two wrenches and back on the road in 20 minutes.  could have been alot worse.

I was talking to a couple of other ebody owners and apparently this is super common. I feel exactly your pain!

Chryco I wish it were that simple. The oil sending unit was removed in favor of a mechanical oil pressure guage and I have tightened down that bolt. I have changed the oil pan gasket, tightened down the intake, changed the o ring on the distributor... I want to say it's a bad rear main seal but I can't seem to confirm that diagnosis. IT does not leak much while it's running but as soon as it gets parked is marks its territory with a couble tablespoons of engine oil.

oil is on the rear portion of the oil pan and on the bottom part of the bell housing... what I need to do is stop trying to diagnose it and just start changing some of the gaskets.

A piece of foam stuck between the pan and bellhousing will do wonders in catching small leaks. Just change the foam block when it starts to drip or change it everytime you start to go out in the car.

Sounds like its the rear main seal, same thing was happening on my 360.  Have you tried a dye test?  It might help you see the origin of the leak.

What engine do you have? My 340 was leaking at the oil filter adapter. Then when driving the high velocity air stream  :burnout: would spread the oil over the bottom of the car and it would drip from various points. We took the adaptor off and it's much better but not perfect yet. Just a thought.

Mine on my truck was the oil sensor (sender).

Tightening the oil pressure line can be the problem , it can split the fittings or crack the line back there , it always seems to look like a rear main !

Happened to me Saturday afternoon, pulled the cuda out and parked in the driveway but when I went to start it later no crank! Had to pull a starter from my used parts stash and swap it out so I could make the cruise in that night.

he's right, especially if you have that nylon tubing for the oil line.

May be time to change all your gaskets and seals,  it's a lot of work but a good insurance policy.  Maybe you can nurse it through the summer and can be a good winter project for you.
