AAR hood texture
« on: July 01, 2014 - 04:30:39 PM »
What is the OE texture of the hood? I thought is had a rough surface.
Who makes the hood correctly. This not a resto since it will be on a '73, but that doesn't matter to me.
I just got a hood from Year One and I am not so amused. Half of it is smooth and half is rough.
lastly, is the OE paint textured rough or doers it just look that way?

Thanks crew. Im finnaly starting this project.  :woohoo:

AAR, T/A and 72 Cuda V21 hoods were all painted with "organisol".  It has a little texture to it.  The correct stuff hasn't been available for a long time.  A lot of cars you see at shows have too much texture.  The way the paint is sprayed is critical.  The texture should be very very fine.  If you rub a rag over the surface, you shouldn't leave behind any lint from the rag.

Cuda tail panels were painted with it as well as certain Challenger tail panels depending on year and options.  It's the same stuff you'd find on Road Runner and Duster blackout hood treatments.

Thanks guys. My new Year One hood is a little ruff in some areas and smooth in others like it had been rubbed in a box for a while. While my Cuda is a '73, I want to use this hood. Drivetrain & suspension I know. Body work is a know nothing about. I'm a little never pus about it all and wonder what I'm in for.

same thing here. when i ordered my T/A hood from year one it basically came in black primer. as Burdar said,
you can't get the organisol any more. i've seen "formulas" that reproduce it if that's what your going for.
myself, i got a kit from SEM called hot rod black. you have to mix it and spray it in a gun. it came out real nice.
i used it on the tail panel too

maybe his concoction of organisol.

but you cannot get the original formula cause there is some ingredients that were deemed not safe by the EPA (to the best of my knowledge)

unless someone has been hording those ingredients for years.

This was from Resto Rick...

Allow surfaces to dry for several weeks before painting cover coats. This is important.

Put 2 light cover coats of semi gloss black over grey primer, allow to dry at least 24 hrs or more before organisoling

Use a gun with a big tip 1.4mm or larger

Cross coat the large area surfaces in 3 directions –eliminates streaking of texture diag first, short length, long length with overlapping passes. It must go on wet.

Test spray before committing to car. Practice a little. Use SLOW thinner !!!! Lay on WET!
Do not lay on dry, paint horizontal.

Patience!!!!! Thin per instructions min 150%

After getting full coverage of texture typically 4 coats thin each progressive coat 25% Use your judgment Think about 6 coats.

Allow each coat to dry for at least 30 min.

Texture must cover surface completely-there should be no gaps in the texture. The purpose of laying it on cross coating & wet is to get the texture to lay down. I am no expert, but I do paint and I have done my fair share of wresting with this paint.

Edge it in with a touch up gun,

Use fine line tape on all paint edge breaks

Do the bottom side of the hood first-part of your practice

Paint All other surfaces at the same time as the top side of the hood.

Make sure grille is out of the car

Across the tops of the fender & across the front header panel be sure to add 1 extra coat of Organisol to resist the long term wear of the paint from stones etc..

Thanks, looks just fine to me. This is not a resto I'm doing but for fun. What else are cars for?!
Those paint directions above are a lot! WOW!

Thanks Mike,

y'know what i think I'm gonna do....?
put the hood on for a while and drive with the old paint (whether it's original.... who knows - i doubt it)

i noticed another thread on a topic I am researching - Repainting Plum Crazy FC7

http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=7801498&page=0&fpart=1&vc=1

the shop is doing the whole car with Glasurit products...

I have asked them to show me a sample and compare to an original part of the car before proceeding with paint...

For the hood, go textured Organosol if you'd like.

For the tail panel, go the smoother Organosol.
Because these cars tend to have high pollutants that kick back and stick to the rear areas.

When I fire mine up cold, I put card board extensions into the valence holes to channel to keep it from spitting up. After driving, sometimes I see spots on the bumper and tail panel so that's why I do that.

Easier to clean and less mess to take care of.
