Crush Can - Learn Something new everyday

Funny, I always thought the crush cans were all the same height.

I guess I was wrong...the shortest one is off my Cuda...the other two are off steering columns I have purchased.





Any ideas why the different heights???

Interesting! I have no idea why. But one thing I noticed about e body crush cans. Every one that I have seen has the date stamped in it.

I never thought of that...it does sort of look that was doesn't it.

How would you tell for sure?

Try measuring the center ridge to center ridge distances and see if they are different for the short and tall one.   :dunno:

there is the non ribbed B body adapter also . It would be hard to compress the can evenly , I have seen some bent ones !
 Could have been an error in the way the ribbing can was formed originally too .

ok, so a little more info... al three cans have a different umber stamped into the top:





The main difference I have noticed is that the height of the bottom of the can, that taller can starts out taller at the bottom.



There are the same amount of ribs on each can, but the ribbed sections are different heights.

It does not look like the small can has been crushed, no visible damage / compression inside the ribbed area.

However, I did notice a difference bottom of the cans. The two taller ones the bottom seems to be pushed out, while th taler can, the bottoms seems to be flat. Not sure if it will show up in pictures...but lets try.

Taller can, from underneath:



the rusty area under the horn ring is not flat.

not sure what any of this means...but I think I will use the shorted one on my car.

Well now that's easy to explain. The one that is longer and rusty on the bottom was yanked on severely when some one was trying to remove it by just pulling it off :2cents:

I wouldnt be surprised they made different sizes over the years.
I couldnt stand how long mine was, putting the wheel too close to my chest for my liking, so I shortened it about 2 inches.
